If you’re a PlayStation fan, Sony’s CES 2025 press conference was a big hit in terms of entertainment. In a series of rapid-fire announcements, the company announced that it will be producing an anime based on the acclaimed game’s cooperative multiplayer mode, Ghost of Tsushima Legends. This was followed by news that Columbia Pictures is in the early stages of developing a movie based on the post-apocalyptic PlayStation game Horizon Zero Dawn. Finally, Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann jumped out and announced that Season 2 of The Last of Us will air on HBO in April.
We already know quite a bit about The Last of Us season 2. It’s based on 2020’s The Last of Us Part 2, but it doesn’t explain all the events of the second game. It would take at least two seasons to retell the story of this wonderfully complex misery simulator. This season, Season 1 veterans Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are joined by Kaitlyn Deaver, Isabella Merced, Catherine O’Hara, and Jeffrey Wright.
Other projects remain a mystery for now. A little over two years ago, we heard that Horizon Zero Dawn was being developed as a series for Netflix, but the project ultimately fell through. I’m very interested to see how they streamline the game’s expansive storyline into a tight narrative for a two-hour movie (or even a three-hour movie), but I’m sure there’s a strong creative team behind this movie. I hope there is.
As for Ghost of Tsushima, this is also one of PlayStation Studio’s most acclaimed and popular titles, with a sequel in the works. So this is just another example of Sony taking some of their best gaming titles and expanding into the broader entertainment space. It makes these stories more accessible to people who are less likely to play a 20-40 hour game.
On a personal note, The Last of Us and Horizon Zero Dawn are two of my all-time favorite games, so in the middle of a very long day at CES These 10 minutes of good news were very welcome.
