Then things got weird.
Well…it’s even weirder. After all, the titles under DC’s Young Animal sign were all a little weird from the beginning. That was their charm. It tapped into the more idiosyncratic aspects of the DC Universe and evolved the sophisticated suspense series of the ’80s into early Vertigo titles for mature readers. Tragic heroes controlled by a mad scientist use a touch of madness to lift rebellious teens out of life’s doldrums.
Then it all comes together in the series’ only crossover, featuring some familiar faces from DC, including one of the bizarre lineups of the Rebirth-era Justice League, and the DCU’s premier trinity, Milkman Man, Father Bruce , Wonder has appeared. wife.
“Some of the best people are weirdos.”
But when you think about it, calling Milk Wars weird is probably an understatement. It was a crossover between the regular creative team and specials written by Steve Orlando (who was writing the Justice League of America books at the time), and art by a number of notable artists (see below) ). The story follows a coalition of Doom Patrol and Young Animal misfits who attempt to stop a reality-altering corporation, Retcon, from modifying Prime Earth and selling it. To call them eccentric perverts is in some ways an understatement.
Contains milk. There. Reality Transformation Company was trying to change the world with milk. And it worked. Retcon and Milkman Man comes out of the ongoing Doom Patrol saga, and the main story of the crossover was about the actions of the Doom Patrol, but it’s kind of a far-flung story, so it’s a bit different from the previous story. It’s not that important to follow. Even if the Casey Brinke relationship is the key point here. When reality changes, you are often just as confused as anyone else. That’s part of the fun.
There are also some hilarious moments that lean really ironic at times, such as what happens to the Justice League, Father Bruce’s absurd origin, and The Wonder Wife’s mom’s milkmaid (it seems wrong, but it’s a theme and shade (Very well suited to the strangeness of the treatment of Wonder Woman), the near antithesis to Wonder Woman’s feminist ideals, and the perfect incorporation of Mirka Andolfo’s art style). Humor balances the real horror underlying Retcon’s attempts to wipe out Prime Earth’s reality.
“Alright, punks in pressed shirts, your dairy show is over!
Many of the cross-over line drawings are by people other than the regular artists of previous ongoing books. Similar to the mainline DC heroes that have been modified, they give the story a somewhat different feel. We get ACO’s adventurous layouts, Langdon Foss and Nick Filardi’s surreal throwback vibes, and Dale Eaglesham’s more traditional superhero look interspersed with some very interesting passion sequences. There’s a sense of familiarity, mostly when combined with regular colorists and letterers, but it’s still a bit off from the usual quirky rhythm. This is a great way to make someone feel like something is wrong. Things change a bit in the epilogue where Nick Derington returns and things go back to “normal”.
At least as normal as DC’s Young Animal. Magdalene Visaggio, Sonny Liu, and Todd Klein have completed Eternity Girl’s rather inventive way of circumventing this reality.
DC/Young Animal – Milk Wars is a must-read for Doom Patrol fans and sets up the second wave of DC’s Young Animal books, with several characters and settings retconned in the future, and new characters introduced. I will. It’s also a quirky take on the Trinity in a surreal story.
