Since the release of iOS 18.2 on December 11th, ChatGPT integration has been an integral part of Apple Intelligence. If you own a recent iPhone, iPad, or Mac, you can access OpenAI’s chatbot directly from your device without going through the ChatGPT app or web client.
What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is a generative AI chatbot created by OpenAI and powered by large-scale language machine learning models. In addition to the ability to interact with people using natural language, ChatGPT can search the web, solve complex math and coding problems, and generate text, images, and audio. As of this writing, the current version of ChatGPT is based on OpenAI’s GPT-4o and 4o mini models.
In June 2024, Apple announced a partnership with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into Apple Intelligence. While some of ChatGPT’s signature features are available directly within iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, many, such as advanced voice modes, are only accessible through the ChatGPT app or OpenAI website.
Where can I use ChatGPT on my iPhone?
Engadget’s Igor Bonifačić
On iPhone, ChatGPT is available through three main surfaces. First, Siri can rely on ChatGPT to answer your questions. If Apple’s digital assistant determines that ChatGPT can help it better assist you, it will ask for your permission to share your request with OpenAI. You can also use ChatGPT to identify locations and objects from the iPhone 16’s camera control menu.
Finally, you can get help from ChatGPT when using Apple’s new Burning Tool. Essentially, ChatGPT helps you compose text whenever you’re typing on your iPhone’s built-in keyboard, including in first-party apps like Notes, Mail, and Messages. This feature can be a little difficult to find, so here’s how to access it:
Long press on a section of text to bring up the text selection tools in iOS 18.
Tap “Burning Tools”. You may need to tap the arrow icon to see the options.
Select Create.
Tap Create with ChatGPT to create a prompt that describes what you want ChatGPT to write.
Do I need an OpenAI account to use ChatGPT on iPhone?
No, you don’t need an OpenAI account to use ChatGPT on your iPhone. However, if you have a paid subscription, you can use ChatGPT features more frequently on your device. All requests are saved to your ChatGPT history when you sign in to your account.
How to set up ChatGPT
If you’re not already prompted to enable ChatGPT on your iPhone, you can manually enable the extension by following these steps.
Go to Settings.
Tap Apple Intelligence & Siri.
Tap “ChatGPT” and select “Setup”.
Tap (Enable ChatGPT) or (Use ChatGPT with your account). Choose the latter if you have an OpenAI account.
