Hyundai will offer free NACS adapters to EV customers starting next year

Hyundai is offering some EV buyers a free CCS to NACS (North American Charging Standard) adapter to charge current models at Tesla Supercharger stations. This will allow owners to charge their CCS-ported Hyundai models on Tesla’s 20,000-strong Supercharger network once deliveries begin in the first quarter of 2025.

Hyundai will provide this adapter free of charge to owners of 2024 and earlier Kona Electric, Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, and Ioniq hatchback models, and 2025 model year Ioniq 6, Ioniq 5N, and Kona Electric Genesis EVs. You can get a free adapter from the MyHyundai owners site. The adapter will be available to customers who purchase a Hyundai EV before January 31, 2025. Sibling brand Kia is also offering a free NACS adapter to some customers starting next year, with a full list of supported models expected soon.

Automakers like Ford are offering perks to their customers, and others may do so in the near future. That’s because the U.S. government recently announced that NACS is becoming an open industry standard and will likely be widely used in charger networks across the continent.

Hyundai is working with many automakers to change the charging port to NACS, so future models won’t need an adapter. Tesla says it will start with the Ioniq 5 in 2025, which will have access to a Tesla Supercharger immediately after shipping. Older CCS-based models are currently inaccessible, but Tesla may be able to do so after the adapter ships.

The news is significant because Hyundai recently became the second-largest EV seller in North America behind Tesla. The company currently sells four models: Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 5N crossovers, Ioniq 6 sedan, and Kona Electric SUV. Meanwhile, Kia Motors offers the EV6 crossover, EV9 SUV, and Niro EV.
