Marvel’s mutant-based X-titles from the ’80s and ’90s featured characters and long-term plots so complex that each series was incomprehensible to all but the most dedicated fans. I was there.
So it’s safe to jump into X-Force at a point when the origin of the alien warrior Shatterstar is being tweaked if I haven’t kept up with the rest and haven’t read any of the early X This should be a great point. -Forcing manga for years, right?
Well, partially. It’s clear that a seed is being planted in this issue where Shatterstar is captured by his X-Force teammates, his identity is being questioned, and is he really Shatterstar or Benjamin? – A human fugitive named Russell. An old friend arrives to get to the bottom of the situation, but Cable hears alarming news from the detective, and soon Shatterstar and his team are in serious trouble.
There’s a lot going on and obviously a lot of characters that we need to know more about. It’s not particularly friendly to the casual reader, the forgotten reader, or the nerd who suddenly decided to start reading comics from 30 years ago, but at least it looks gorgeous.
It’s very 90’s style. Big, bold, highly stylized characters and truly gorgeous coloring. After Marvel acquired Malibu Comics and acquired (at the time) state-of-the-art coloring technology, they produced some great work in that regard. X-Force #59 is a perfect example of this.
So is it worth reading? It’s a little hard to recommend unless you’re already familiar with X-Force’s run at the time, but if you can accept that some plot points don’t make much sense without proper context; It’s thoroughly enjoyable to read and sets up the next issue well.
