He’s coming. The first trailer for James Gunn’s Superman is set to be released tomorrow, but writer-director James Gunn has been running a media operation that generates dozens of headlines with every sentence uttered. .
However, this report will focus on just one topic: whether to use trunks or not.
Superman’s early appearances by creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster began a long tradition of superheroes who wore trunks over tights, inspired by carnival strongmen and acrobats. Despite Edna Mode’s warning decades later, the addition of the cape gave Superman sense.
However, the movie version of Superman struggled mightily with Trunks’ issues, resulting in a series of powerbombs to the original design. This was accelerated by the increased use of superhero “exoskeleton”-like costumes, both on paper and in actual filming. Advances in stretchable materials have added a layer of latex for extra protection…and to keep things fit and trim so actors don’t get any extra fat on set. I did. (Many movie superheroes actually wear muscle suits.)
Henry Cavill clearly didn’t need Super Spanx, but Man of Steel director Zack Snyder ditched the trunks and gave his Superman a totally modern textured armor-like look. gave.
But in Gunn’s Superman, the latest in a very long line of DC’s most important superhero movies of all time, the trunks are back. And Gunn revealed that the person who saved the look was star David Corenswet himself. But not after much discussion.
“At the end of the day,[the discussion]wasn’t that heated. It had been heated for a while. I was on the ‘No Trunks’ team for a long time,” Gunn told reporters on set earlier this year. He spoke at a press conference and was reported by multiple media outlets. “And Zack (Snyder) said that when he did it, he tried a billion different trunk versions, just like we did. And I went back to no trunk, no trunk, no trunk. And I’m like, “Let’s just do it thoroughly.” Keep trying the trunk and see what happens. ”And David[Corenswet]said something that really affected me. ”
What was Corenswet’s powerful message? “We tried on all the different versions and did screen tests with and without the trunks on,” Gunn told reporters. . “And one of the things David said is that Superman wants kids not to be scared of Superman. He’s an alien. He has these incredible powers. He can shoot beams from his eyes and blow up trucks. He’s incredibly powerful, he may seem scary, but he’s unique and wants people to like him. He wants to be a symbol of hope and positivity.”
In the end, looking like a wrestler was a more approachable image, Gunn said. “He dresses like a pro wrestler and he dresses like people aren’t afraid of him and it shows. It really hit home. And there’s a flirtatiousness to the Superman costume.” Trying to pretend that you don’t have a problem is fundamentally a serious matter. I think it’s a stupid thing to try to show, because he’s a superhero. He’s the first, light-colored person, and that’s where we land and ultimately. We got to the point where almost everyone agreed on the trunk.”
Perhaps this discussion of clothing subconsciously influenced the (somewhat controversial) first teaser image for Superman, which showed Coren Wet…clothed.
Luckily, we didn’t see Superman pulling on his trunks. Are Manti wrestlers really friendly? Now, that’s a long discussion that covers many areas that I haven’t touched on this time.
I won’t bother posting full images of Cowenwet’s costumes since they have only been seen in set leaks, but they are briefs and they are red.
You can read many summaries of the rest of Gunn’s comments on the Superman movies, but we sought out the key takeaways for our loyal ComicBeat readers.
Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely’s All-Star Superman serves as the film’s comic inspiration. I think obviously the original Donner film influenced me, but there’s a lot of stuff in this that doesn’t. I just make donor-type movies. It’s completely different. Zack[Snyder]did a great job. So there are many ways that it has influenced me. There are many ways in which the DC animated world has influenced me, but most of all, the work of comics, and most of all, All-Star Superman. With a Silver Age vibe and a sci-fi approach with gadgetry, Lex (Luthor) is truly a magician in a sense. He is a scientist, but he is very good at science, and I think he is like a magician. ”
This is not the origin. “Superman already exists. Lois and Clark already know each other. Lex hated Superman’s guts from the beginning, but they didn’t know each other personally. So We start right in the middle of the action.”
But this is a movie that has to stand on its own. Now, listen to me. When we get down to business, things might change a bit. Have the seeds been planted? The seed is certainly planted, but it’s never going to be important to me in any given scene. It’s always about going to the next scene. What is happening at that moment? How can we make this movie the best it can be? ”
The “Legacy” part of the title has been removed. And this is not about looking back. ”
Unlike the previous cancer movies (Guardians of the Galaxy), this one is more serious. It’s full of humor. People like Rachel (Brosnahan, who plays Lois Lane) are very funny, and David (Corren Sweat, who plays Superman) is very funny (also funny), and we try to make things that are humorous and grounded. Not only is there an incredibly fantastical world. It’s fantasy and it’s taken from other things like Game of Thrones where it’s this world where superheroes actually exist. What kind of people are they? There’s an undeniable magic to it. ”
Songs from the likes of “Guardians” and “The Suicide Squad” will also appear. This is a good thing because the gun’s needle drop is really nice. Motifs from John Williams’ beloved Superman score also appear. So it’s not about the song. It contains several songs. And, of course, I chose those songs beforehand, but in terms of the score, it’s very different from my previous films and it’s not really the driving force. It’s much more of a score movie. ”
Green Lantern (Nason Fillion), Hawkgirl (Isabella Merced), and Mister Terrific (Ed Guthigi) play important roles. They have their moments. They are characters, not just cameos. Although they are supporting characters, Mr. Terrific is the protagonist of those characters. In fact, he’s a big part of the story. So it was fun. ”
Clark and Lois end up having a complicated relationship. “There’s a long scene that depicts their relationship and how they interact and what it’s like for these incredibly intelligent, strong-willed, stubborn, skeptical journalists to be in a relationship.” With someone who can lift skyscrapers. ”
This is DC’s, and Gunn’s, most important new release. “I literally just gave up my entire life and soul. Frankly, I’m miserable. I’m really miserable, but I hope it’s for the greater good.”
