The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are ending their 40th anniversary year in perhaps the best and most consistent fashion ever. Their main comic has just been rebooted and reunited the brothers, each with a strong storyline. Their “Saturday Morning Adventures” series offers more family-friendly and fun stories, and “Mutant Nation” explores their world further (although it begins with a story focused on Raphael). Was it necessary to do so?)
and the surprise return of Nightwatcher, a character from Juni Ba and Phelo Pe’s underrated and definitely underrated 2007 TMNT animated film. In that movie, the armored character was Raphael, but this new Nightwatcher series fits into the current continuity, with a new mutant taking up the mantle of a dark nocturnal vigilante.
At the end of the first issue it was revealed that their true identity was Jennika, a female turtle, but what was really refreshing in subsequent issues was that nothing much was done about this reveal and the story is simply staying focused. Regarding vigilante assistance to mutants in dire need.
Barr used an urban setting filled with displaced, misunderstood, and abused mutants to explore themes of prejudice, class, and injustice. This is by no means a new trick, but just as an example, given how well this was utilized in the classic X-Men titles I grew up reading in the ’80s, applying it to the world of TMNT is… makes sense. The focus shifts away from the action-packed antics of the four central brothers, giving us far more opportunity to take a closer look at their city’s new dysfunctional society.
It’s powerful stuff and definitely my type of manga. Despite how strong the rest of the TMNT comic line-up is, Nightwatcher is my favorite of them all at the moment. In its 41st year, there are many more TMNT comics to come!
