Brendan Green is largely credited with creating the iconic PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, also known as PUBG, and inventing the entire battle royale genre. We knew he left PUBG’s publisher to start an independent studio in 2021, but now we know what he’s been working on for the past few years.
His studio, PlayerUnknown Productions, has several titles lined up, calling it an “ambitious three-game plan.” First off, “Prologue: Go Wayback!” is described as a “single-player open-world emergent game in the survival genre.” It uses the developer’s “in-house machine learning terrain generation technology” to create “millions of maps.” As you can see below, these maps are also easy on the eyes.

Not much is known about the gameplay other than the description and the aforementioned terrain generation technology. However, you can currently wishlist it on Steam. The company plans to release the game as an early access title in the first half of next year after a series of playtests.
There’s also a nifty tech demo called “Preface: Undiscovered World.” Download it now for free. This demo is being released to showcase the company’s in-house game engine called Melba. The prologue allows players to explore a “global world generated in real time.”

“This digital planet is still completely empty for now, but everyone who enters and shares their feedback will contribute to its future development,” said Green. To that end, the Melba engine will also be used to develop other games in the future.
One such future game is called Artemis, which is described as a “massively multiplayer sandbox experience.” We don’t know much about the title, other than that it’s probably years away. Greene says his company plans to release two unreleased games after Prologue: Go Wayback! Each will address “key technical challenges” that will help develop the more ambitious Artemis. Either way, PlayerUnknown Productions certainly seems to be off to a promising start.
