NASA has announced a new schedule for the upcoming Artemis mission that will send astronauts to the moon. This is the second time these crewed missions have been postponed, after NASA postponed the schedule in January. The agency is currently aiming to launch the Artemis 2 mission in April 2026, and said it will also postpone the Artemis 3 mission until mid-2027.
The delay was caused in part by a problem with the Orion spacecraft’s heat shield during the unmanned Artemis 1 test flight. During that mission, the charred material on the heat shield wore away unexpectedly. Data inside the capsule showed that had a crew been present during the flight, temperatures would still have been safe, even if the heat shield behaved differently than expected. But once the astronauts are on board, you don’t want to risk that.
“Victor, Christina, Jeremy, and I have been following every aspect of this decision and appreciate NASA’s openness to consider all options and make decisions in the best interests of human spaceflight.” said NASA astronaut Reed Wiseman. “We are excited to fly Artemis 2 and pave the way for continued human exploration of the Moon and Mars,” said NASA’s Victor Glover and Christina Koch, who will lead the Artemis 2 mission. Artemis 2 is scheduled for a 10-day mission to orbit the moon and return to Earth. Although the team will not land on our closest satellite, the test flight aims to collect more data about the Orion space capsule ahead of the Artemis 3 mission, where the team will land at the moon’s south pole.
