This isn’t a drill, folks: Tetris for NES is joining the Nintendo Switch Online library on December 12th. Nintendo of America suddenly announced this exciting announcement today on X. The NES port of Tetris first started way back. It’s been a very long time since 1989, so it’s been a long time coming for this classic title to return to Nintendo hardware.
That’s not to say there weren’t many other ways to modify Tetriminos, though. Tetris is a perennially popular puzzle game, with many official releases and many imitators. Many of them are very good, including the dazzling Tetris effects. However, the NES version is the one most often hailed as the masterpiece. This is an iteration used primarily in the engaging competitive Tetris circuit, and over 30 years later players were still able to “win” the game by destroying the tiny computer’s brain. That’s all. For those nostalgic for the days of the NES, or those who outgrew their NES hardware a long time ago, it’s exciting news that you can now play this iconic version of Tetris in a modern way.
The Switch Online service has received some notable updates over the past few weeks. Three Sega Genesis games have joined the online Switch library, and Nintendo has also released a music streaming app for members of subscription plans. That’s all well and good, but the really exciting development is the expected announcement of the Switch 2 in March.
