On Monday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) became the first individual account to have 1 million followers on Bluesky. The decentralized platform has seen a surge in adoption since the US election, with its user base tripling within three months. As for why, AOC wrote about Elon Musk’s X in a recent post: It’s not rocket science. ”
AOC was active on the platform long before the post-election surge, posting 437 times since joining the platform in April 2023. “Waitress turned Bronx and Queens congressman,” her profile description says. “Small money is supporting grassroots elections. A better world is possible.”
Bluesky’s account remains the most popular on the platform, with nearly 17 million followers at press time. However, AOC has the most users of any individual with 1,032,729 users. The next closest are George Takei with 862,646 and Mark Hamill with 797,541. After all, it pays to be resourceful, sharp, and socially conscious, starring in the legendary “Star…” series.
Topping the list of publications is The Onion (769,718), followed by The New York Times (762,499), indicating that satire is perhaps the most trusted news source today. Shameless plug: You can also follow Bluesky on Engadget.
