Action Comics #1077 is, in a sense, the end of the “second act” of the weekly “Phantom” storyline. However, it was a terrible ending. Superman rushes back to the Phantom Zone after learning that the new ruler, Ethir, is gathering mass from the sun to create new matter in the sun. This ultimately causes the hapless sun to self-destruct, causing massive death and damage…and to make matters worse, the sun powering Ethil is also in Earth’s orbit. is!
That’s a pretty tall order, but Mark Waid and Clayton Henry are up to the challenge. Henry’s art is packed with action, from the first page of Superman flying through the Phantom Zone to save those in danger, to his battle with Aethil. Both Supes and Ethil try their best. Because the former is one of the most powerful superheroes of all time, and the other can change things on a whim. This creates a splash page that is worth more than the cover price. When all is said and done, Henry will have submitted some iconic Superman images.
Wade also continues to find new ways to test Superman’s limits, especially regarding the threat posed by the Aesir. It’s not just the Earth that is suffering. The zone is too chaotic for its inhabitants and threatens to kill them. But Superman refuses to leave the Zone’s inhabitants to destruction, even if his family, friends, and adopted world are in danger. This is a testament to Wade’s skill that he never loses sight of what makes Superman a great character.

I also appreciate that this issue finally brings closure to the subplot involving Conner Kent, Kon Kenan, and the lost items from Fortress Solitude. I expressed my problems with this plot thread in a previous review, so I won’t litigate it again here, but I hope Michael Helfer returns to write his Action Comics arc. . His line drawings are full of energy.
Supergirl’s backup by Mariko Tamashiro and Meghan Hetrick also continues to unfold with precision like clockwork. Tamaki draws a surprising parallel between Supergirl and the prisoner she was supposed to rescue, ultimately ending with a shocking request. Hetrick brings the story to life with some pretty amazing imagery, including some shout-outs to “Supergirl: Women of Tomorrow.” This only reinforces my previous belief that this is meant to serve as a sequel to The Women of Tomorrow, and I love it.
Action Comics #1077 is packed with intense action sequences, but it also includes a story that stays true to the core of Superman. Now, Superman is in a hurry to return to Earth, and his next difficult mission awaits him. I believe that Wade and Henry will guide the Man of Steel.
