Microsoft has quietly announced the end of an era for the Xbox Avatar Editor, which will be retired early next year. “Due to low engagement and a shift in focus to delivering experiences for other players, the Xbox Avatar Editor app will no longer be available starting January 9, 2025,” the company wrote in an FAQ about the feature. .
A modern approach to personalizing avatars was launched in 2018. The Xbox Avatar Editor allows players to customize their cartoon version using both free and purchased cosmetic libraries. There’s a lot of variety and room for personal expression in the options, so you can really create a distinct likeness of yourself, or the person you want to present to the Xbox community. Microsoft has announced that it will refund players who purchased Xbox Avatar Editor between November 1, 2023 and the app’s end date.
Microsoft introduced avatars for player accounts during the Xbox 360 era. These Xbox original avatars are not affected by the editor app termination. These will still appear on Xbox 360 hardware as well as players using old school images.
If you’ve created an avatar that you want to keep as your Xbox profile picture for the future, you can use the Avatar Editor app to save the photo to your account until the shutdown date. The Xbox Support Forums have detailed instructions on how to create or upload a profile photo.
