Humanoid Origin will be closed. The three-year-old indie game studio helmed by former BioWare GM and Mass Effect creator Casey Hudson has become the latest victim of a harsh climate for game developers and other industry professionals.
In a LinkedIn post announcing the closure, Humanoid Origin said it did not do enough to protect its team from the industry’s woes. “Due to an unexpected lack of funding, we are no longer able to maintain operations,” the studio wrote.
Hudson founded the studio (then called Humanoid Studios) in 2021, when the industry was ramping up recruitment after the coronavirus lockdown. He described the startup as a way to “unleash creative freedom for developers” by “bringing innovation and artistry to players through completely new IP.” The company’s website praised content built around interactive worlds, characters, and storytelling, while embracing innovations that “feel like magic.”

The following year, the studio announced that it was developing a multi-platform AAA game set in an “all-new science fiction world.” IGN noted on Monday that Humanoid Origin began hiring in May of this year.
The studio released a statement today saying, “We are heartbroken that we will not be able to complete this new sci-fi world.” “However, our primary concern at this time is our team and we are fully committed to supporting their transition to new employment.”
