Bluesky gets 1 million sign-ups in one week, user count jumps to 15 million

Bluesky may still be the underdog in the race for an alternative to X, but the service, once affiliated with Twitter, is gaining momentum. The company said in an update that the app added more than 1 million new users last week, pushing the number of users past the 15 million mark.

Although Bluesky is still much smaller than its biggest rival, Threads, which has 275 million users, there are signs that Threads users are becoming more interested in the startup. “Bluesky” has been a trending topic on Threads in recent days, with in-app search suggestions showing more than 19,000 posts about “Bluesky.” Bluesky itself has been trying to attract Threads users in recent weeks by posting regularly to the meta-owned service.

The efforts seem to be paying off. A month ago, Engadget noted that the service had just under 9 million users. The company’s mobile apps also occupy the top spot in Apple’s App Store, followed by Threads and ChatGPT. Recent success also appears to have been driven, at least in part, by dissatisfaction with Elon Musk and X following the US presidential election.

A recent report from web analytics firm SimilarWeb found that on Nov. 7, “more than 115,000 U.S. web visitors deactivated their accounts,” which was “more than any other person during Elon Musk’s tenure.” “That’s more than any other day.” The report also notes that “Bluesky’s web traffic and daily active users increased dramatically in the week before the election and again after Election Day,” with Bluesky’s web traffic outpacing threads. It is said that there were some places. (However, Threads’ mobile usage is still “much more advanced” than Bluesky).

“In the US, Bluesky received more web traffic than Threads immediately after the election,” the report said. “For context, it’s important to note that both services are app-centric, even though they support a web user interface.”

BlueSky appears to be trying to differentiate itself from larger rivals controlled by billionaires. The company started as an internal project at Twitter and has since spun off as an independent organization, experimenting with new features such as custom feeds, user-created moderation services, and “starter packs” for new users.

“You’re probably used to being locked into a single algorithm controlled by a few people, but that’s not the case anymore,” Rose Wang, Bluesky’s chief operating officer, said on Tuesday. said in a video for users. “Bluesky has around 50,000 different feeds. These feeds give you a cozy corner to meet people with the same interests, and promote the most polarizing posts and biggest brands. You can actually make friends again because you’re no longer tied to a dominant algorithm. That’s what Bluesky is all about.
