Abrams Comic Arts launched an English-language manga publisher called Kana in April, and one of its licenses was debut author Yumeji’s Witch’s Eden. Witch’s Eden is interesting in that it was created at the request of an editor at the French manga publisher Ki-oon, and was subsequently released in Japan.
A preview of Volume 1 of Witch’s Eden has been released. The artwork evokes a Ghibli-esque atmosphere with detailed backgrounds and expressive character faces and eyes. The first six pages begin with an old woman named Tula giving the main character, Pili, a seed to help him find Eden. This coming-of-age story is set in a world where only witches have the ability to communicate with nature, but their powers are feared by humans and they are forced to hide.

Piri, a young apprentice witch who was chased from her home by humans, sets out on a journey with her wolf orc. However, she is not used to the outside world or traveling long distances. Her fatigue wears off rapidly, and she falls down a rocky slope and injures herself. Fortunately, a boy named Bowie found Piri and brought her home to nurse her back to health. However, the arrival of a strange young woman arouses suspicion among the other villagers, who soon see through her true nature as a witch. And all captured witches are subject to the same fate – execution!
Volume 1 of The Witches of Eden will be available in bookstores on November 12th, and in comic shops the following day. This paperback consists of 184 black and white pages and is priced at $12.99 in the U.S. and $16.99 in Canada.
