Welcome to another edition of the Fantastic Five, a love letter to the best comics of the week! This week, DC has another absolute win as Marvel brings an MCU original to the comics page. Let’s go to the books!

Best comics of the week: November 6, 2024

#5: Ultimate #6

The Ultimates #6 delivers a compelling and intense showdown that raises the stakes for this team of heroes in a way that redefines the Ultimate Universe. Deniz Camp’s writing and Juan Frigeri’s art combine to create an evocative, gory, and visually stunning issue that will leave readers in suspense. Underlying personal motivations and evolving team dynamics add depth to the relentless action and set the stage for the big changes ahead. This issue is not just about fighting. It’s about what happens next, and readers will be eagerly anticipating the outcome and future direction of The Ultimates.

#4: Kaholi: World Reshaper #1

Kaholi: Reshaper of Worlds further opens up the title character’s perspective as she interacts with a number of Marvel characters. Kaholi’s one-shots are more than just comics. It’s a heartfelt celebration of Indigenous culture and a thrilling new chapter that solidifies her place in Marvel’s multiverse.

#3: JSA #1

JSA #1 gives the Justice Society the fresh start it needs, as Jeff Lemire and Diego Orlotegui push the team into a new era. If DC had to choose a book to represent its “all-in” era, this would be at the top of the list.

#2: Absolute superhuman #1

Absolute Superman #1 is another home run for DC Comics’ Absolute line. This first issue opens up the planet Krypton in a whole new way, setting up Superman as the ultimate immigrant underdog. Absolute Superman #1 by Jason Aaron and Rafa Sandoval is a bold, gritty reimagining of the iconic hero, blending raw loneliness with a modern exploration of Superman’s immigrant heritage. All of which pays homage to his legacy.

#1: Batgirl #1

Batgirl #1 is my favorite comic book of the year. This is real scum, real scum. This is the Cass that made me fall in love with her character and changed my life forever. It made me feel more comfortable being different and less ashamed of it. Choices matter in this book. Cass talks about how her life has been defined by the choices she has made and the choices she has made herself. She may not have chosen her origins or birth parents, but she did choose the father she wanted and the life she deserved. The life of a hero. That’s my girl. I’m so glad you’re back.
