8BitDo introduces new version of retro mechanical keyboard with built-in numeric keypad

Accessory maker 8BitDo has announced its second new product in two weeks. After announcing a latch-on gaming controller for Android smartphones, the company has announced a new version of its retro mechanical keyboard that adds a number pad and new shortcuts. And yes, the $120 accessory includes a super button that still makes you want to crush it.

Like its predecessor, the 8BitDo Retro 108 Mechanical Keyboard takes inspiration from Nintendo’s NES and Famicom consoles. These two variations match the colors of these 1980s consoles almost perfectly. White, dark gray, and black for the NES-inspired flavor, and white and deep red for the NES flavor. Appropriately, the latter has Japanese markings below the English letters.

The keyboard is 22% wider than the standard version to accommodate the integrated number pad and other additional features. The extended area also includes Windows shortcuts, a calculator, a feature lock, and a screen lock button.

Otherwise, the new keyboard retains the functionality of the original 87 keys. This includes use in wired or wireless modes (including Bluetooth or wireless 2.4G), custom key mapping with 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2 (Windows only), N-key rollover, and hot-swappable keys.

The new model includes the same pair of super buttons as the smaller version. These programmable macro keys look like giant versions of the A and B buttons on the NES and Famicom. Connects directly to the keyboard via the 3.5mm jack and can connect up to 4 sets. You can also order Super Buttons (red, blue, or yellow) for $30.24 each.

8BitDo officially states that this keyboard is only supported on Windows and Android. This is likely because the customization software is only available for Windows and Android. However, it is still available on macOS. You just miss out on the opportunity to customize your keys and macros and receive software updates.

The 8BitDo Retro 108 mechanical keyboard will be available in NES and Famicom versions on December 12th. You can pre-order it now for $120 through Amazon.
