The day may soon come when Virtua Fighter will once again be in the public eye. Justin Scarpone, Sega’s global head of transmedia, casually dropped news about a new game in the series during an interview with VGC. “We are currently developing a series of titles that fall into the legacy bucket that we announced at The Game Awards last year,” he said. “We have Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, Shinobi, and another Virtua Fighter in the works. It’s all very exciting.”
It’s really exciting. Most of these titles were certainly featured at The Game Awards as part of Sega’s new era, but Scarpone’s reference to Virtua Fighter is a revelation. The last numbered work in the series was Virtua Fighter 5, released in 2006. Not that the fighting game series has been static since then. There have been riffs and redos, such as 2015’s Virtual Fighter 5: Final Showdown and 2021’s Virtua Fighter Ultimate Showdown. But it’s been nearly 20 years since fans got a brand new game.
Other than this blunt confirmation that Sega is working on a sequel, we don’t know anything about what the future holds for Virtua Fighter 6. It seems likely that Akira Yuuki and other familiar faces will return, but anything is possible when it comes to characters and characters. Mechanics.
