Creature Commando is back with a nice mix of new crew members and monsters. Led by writer and actor David Dastmalchian (listen to his interview on the AIPT Comics Podcast!), the first issue introduces the madness of nasty monsters. The latest issue made it very clear that this team is very troublesome, but it’s nothing that science can’t solve.
The second issue, titled “Soldiers of the Damned,” begins with Dr. West trying to wrap things up. Lucky, Frankenstein’s monster, is tied up and unable to move, while the vampires are all dramatic and the werewolves are in a panic. Before going into detail about what’s going on now, Dr. West sets up an event that happened two months ago.
The most meaty part of the issue focuses on an altercation in Marin County, California, with Zatanna investigating something sinister in the mansion’s basement. Shortly after she frees the chained humans, the previous Creature Commando enters and warns her of great danger. Thus begins a fierce battle for survival as the good monsters are killed. This scene shows that keeping the creature commandos in line has already failed once.
They certainly don’t seem like good people.

If you like monster vs. monster action, this issue has plenty of werewolf vs. vampire battles for you to enjoy. It feels like it distracts from the bigger picture, but Jesús Elbaz does a good job of keeping it interesting. It also emphasizes that this team is not on the same page, even among teammates.
This problem also has a strong scientific element. Dastmalchian reveals interesting technological ideas for powering up monsters. This is a smart angle, since werewolves usually can’t fight without a full moon, and vampires aren’t that strong without the right blood. These add a logical element to the chaos that is the monster.
The main villain appears alongside the team’s mayhem and is given a few pages to end the issue. At this point, it’s clear that Dastmalkian and Elbaz are setting up a monster team of underdogs who can take on S-tier supervillains and barely avoid killing each other. bring it on.
DC Horror Presents: Creature Commandos #2 is a good second issue, if a bit distracting. The attention to detail regarding the science of meeting the monster’s needs is interesting, while monitoring the animosity within the team is fun. However, this second issue falls prey to idleness and prevents the main story from really taking off.

The scientific explanation for monster powers is sound.
