Ultimate pop-up book review

oh! I don’t usually start reviews with an exclamation point, but I’m very impressed with the amazing paper engineering that Matthew Reinhart has constructed in the latest edition of DC Super Heroes: The Ultimate Pop-up Book. As a 32-year-old man with no children, I haven’t spent much time with pop-up books in recent years…and now that I think about it, I really missed out on that opportunity?!?!This amazing pop-up book! will please people of all ages, from excited 6-year-olds to, as I said, average 32-year-old comic book geeks.

However, I have to issue a big warning to parents (or anyone, really…) who are planning to spend $50 USD on this wonderful book. Yes, it’s definitely a little expensive. This wonderful book is delicate. Again, I haven’t spent much time with pop-up picture books lately, but to my recollection, none are as detailed, intricate, and intricate as what Reinhardt designed for this experience. It was. Obviously this is a user error on my part, but when I opened the book to the last page, which is an incredible battle between DC’s heroes and villains, the pop-up immediately tore a few pages down the middle and the pop-up appeared. No longer. I can play it properly! I can re-tape it and it seems to be working 90% of the time… but this book is definitely fragile and not 1000% suitable for young children (or me) without supervision.

Honestly…do you really care? The fragility of this book, mixed with the fact that it didn’t come with a “please be gentle” warning, definitely lowers the review by at least a point. But lo and behold, thanks to Reinhart’s engineering and the inks and colors of Brad Walker, Marco Santucci, Tom Derenick, and Paul Mounts, it’s a truly beautiful and detailed piece of work! You won’t be able to stop opening the pages to find out how this paper’s engineering works, or to figure out details you missed the first time. What’s more, this (huge) book’s cover is filled with illustrations by acclaimed artist Dan Mora, one of DC’s best artists working today, making this book a treat to look at. It’s been really fun.

The DC Super Heroes: Ultimate Pop-up Book consists of six main page spreads, which may not sound like a lot, but these few pages alone make the book nearly 2.5 inches wide (my I promise you it will be the same. Man: Inferno Omnibus, literally 1,240 pages long. Page 6 focuses on Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman/Flash/Green Lantern, the Villains, and the final battle. In addition to the large main pop-up art on each page, each section includes at least one reading panel that can be opened to display the Super Family on the Superman page or the terrifying face of the Joker alongside the Villains. A small pop-up will appear.

This book is so much fun! I am giving it to my 6 year old cousin for Christmas and he will absolutely love it! I am very impressed with Reinhardt’s engineering skills and if he made this for the X-Men…I would buy it. Again, this is a delicate book filled with carefully constructed pop-up art. So if you give this to a young child, make sure to supervise their reading time to the fullest, unless you don’t mind pop-ups. It’s ruined! If you, your kids, or any other comic geek in your life loves DC Comics and is craving a new comic book experience, we highly recommend checking out DC Super Heroes: The Ultimate Pop-up Book I will.
