Next summer, Dark Horse Comics will publish a new hardcover collection of Mike Mignola’s Hellboy universe, The Serpent in the Garden: Ed Gray and the Last Battle for England. The book includes a three-issue miniseries of the same name written by Mignola, illustrated by longtime collaborator Ben Stenbeck, colored by Dave Stewart, and lettered by Clem Robbins.

“The Serpent in the Garden” takes place after the events of “Sir Edward Grey: Acheron and Koschei”, but also includes the Wild Hunt trilogy, “BPRD: The Devil Who Knows”, “Hellboy”, and Of course there is a connection to Sir Edward Grey. Witch discoverer. Alice Monaghan, Queen of Avalon, asks Sir Edward to protect the last remaining realms of Old Earth against Morgan le Fay, King Arthur’s half-sister.
“This is about tying up a lot of dangling threads and saying goodbye to some of my favorite characters (I think, but I’m not sure),” Mignola said. “We’re going to miss them, but the truth is, I think they’ve suffered enough.”
He’s not wrong about that. Hecate once warned Sir Edward that he would “suffer as few have suffered before,” and that proved to be true. Sir Edward has suffered immeasurably since his first appearance in 1997’s Hellboy: Wake the Devil. But don’t expect The Serpent in the Garden to be a completely gloomy tale.
“This is fun,” Stenbeck promised. “Mike gave me the space to go a little crazy, and I think this story is a beautiful farewell to some of the important characters in the Hellboy universe.”
To celebrate this, the upcoming collection will include a new epilogue by Mike Mignola. This is not the first time Mignola has added an epilogue to a story in his collection, but it is certainly the longest at 17 pages. I guarantee you, this is going to be something special. The book also includes a cover gallery and unpublished sketchbook material.
The Serpent in the Garden: Ed Gray and the Last Battle for England will be released in bookstores on July 8, 2025 and in comic shops on July 9, 2025. For those who picked up this story in hardcover, issue 1 will be released on November 27th.
