With the announcement of Abrams Comic Arts’ manga magazine “Kana”, it became inevitable that a new horror manga would appear. In fact, two of the books will be released on October 29, 2024. “Leviathan” by Shiro Kuroi and “Manhole” by Tetsuya Tsutsui. Both are the first books in an entirely new series, which I hope will set the tone for Kana’s future adventures into horror.
Leviathan has an Event Horizon feel to it, given its setting, hinting at the horrors explored there. The story focuses on a group of children who accidentally discover an abandoned spaceship in space (this is where its influence comes into play). Clues abound as to why it’s floating around completely lifeless. Or so it seems. This ship, called Leviathan, is huge and has a secret hidden inside.
Manhole follows two detectives as they investigate a series of bloody murders that may involve a pandemic-level biological threat. Murder and brutal blackmail aren’t common bedfellows, so it’ll be interesting to see how they play out in this new story. Murder in comics is never simple, but Manhole makes it even more complicated by the fear that something has hit so close to home and continues to hit.
Both books will be released tomorrow, so be sure to give them a read to see if Kana has what it takes to deliver the best comics when it comes to horror.
The official PR is as follows.
Perfect for fans of Moebius, Star Wars, and Katsuhiro Otomo, Shiro Kuroi’s Leviathan Volume 1 follows a group of students pitted against each other in a fierce battle for survival in deep space. This gripping sci-fi survival horror revolves around Leviathan, a gigantic spaceship abandoned in a galaxy far, far away. When the looters break into the abandoned ship, they discover middle school student Kazuma’s diary, which records the gruesome fate of the ship’s passengers.
Readers join the marauders as they piece together a decades-long story of an innocent school trip to Earth with a tragic and brutal ending. Trapped in space with not enough oxygen left to wait for rescue, Kazuma has a mental breakdown when he realizes his only hope for survival is a cryonics storage unit in the center of the ship, and his teacher and record the betrayal of classmates. . Friends meet friends, teachers meet students, and a bloody battle for survival ensues, forcing each survivor to confront the value of their own lives. As the Marauders read on, they come to the chilling realization that somewhere inside there is still one survivor. One of Japan’s best-selling new manga titles, Leviathan’s incredibly gory illustrations and tightly paced plot will leave readers on the edge of their seats, long after the last page of each volume is over. It will stay in my head forever.
The horror continues with manga star Tetsuya Tsutsui’s Manhole Volume 1. This first volume is the first in a three-volume horror thriller about two detectives who try to solve a series of mysterious deaths and encounter a much larger conspiracy and a potential man-made global pandemic. This is the volume. It’s perplexing because it’s deadly.
Detectives Ken Mizoguchi and Nao Inoue investigate a series of bloody murders when they begin discovering a deadly biological agent that can cause an epidemic. An unlikely lead leads them to search for a mysterious photographer, but as they follow the shadows, the infection continues to spread. This thrilling detective novel with a biological horror hook will keep readers on their toes.
