Blue Sky has revealed how to start making money without necessarily relying on advertising. The platform will continue to be free for everyone, but there is a premium subscription that offers profile customization tools (remember when Myspace offered it for free?) and access to high-quality video uploads. Preparations are underway.

However, one thing you don’t get as a paying user is that you don’t get any preferential treatment. Unlike certain other social platforms, Bluesky does not increase the visibility of premium members’ posts. According to Chief Operating Officer Rose Wang, the company also does not accept blue checks.

Additionally, Bluesky is planning something like a tip jar for creators. “We’re proud of our vibrant community of creators, including artists, writers, developers, and more, and we want to establish independent monetization avenues for them as well,” the blog post said. mentioned in. “Our plans include building a payments service so people can support the creators and projects they love.” Bluesky plans to reveal more details in the future, but the platform will It is unclear whether there are plans to receive any part of the payment.

Bluesky revealed its initial monetization plans in announcing its Series A funding round. Raised $15 million from investors. The round’s lead investor is Web3 VC firm Blockchain Capital, but Bluesky is “not looking to hyper-financialize social experiences (through tokens, crypto trading, NFTs, etc.).”

“Bluesky is supported by a core team of 20 people, moderators, and support agents,” Wang wrote about Bluesky. “Our biggest costs are our team and infrastructure. Subscription revenue helps us improve our app, grow our developer ecosystem, and gives us time to explore business models beyond traditional advertising. Masu.”

The platform currently has more than 13 million users, many of whom have defected from X following the service’s temporary ban in Brazil. (Analysts at Appfigures estimate that 3.6 million downloads of the Bluesky app came from Brazil, about 36% of the total.) After making certain changes, other companies also made the switch.
