As announced at this weekend’s New York Comic Con “Avatar Legacy Publishing” panel, Dark Horse Comics has released a new Avatar: The Last Airbender graphic novel, “Avatar: The Last Airbender” — Ashes of the Academy” is scheduled to be published. The book reunites writer Faith Erin Hicks, artist Peter Wortman, colorist Adele Matera, letterer Comiccraft, and series creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. The story depicts Zuko’s half-sister Kii entering the Royal Women’s Fire Academy.

Created in collaboration with writer Gene Luen Yang and artist Gurihiru, Kiyi first appeared in the 2013 sequel graphic novel The Search Part Two. She is the daughter of Ursa, the exiled mother of firebending Prince Zuko and Princess Azula, and their childhood sweetheart Noren, and was born approximately five years before the events of the animated series. She then appeared in the third installment and Yang & Gurihiru’s 2015-2016 trilogy Smoke and Shadow, and also appeared in the companion book Avatar: The Last Airbender: Legacy He appeared as a young adult in “Of the Fire Nation”. She is the first character derived from comics to take center stage in one of the books.
Ashes of the Academy is available for pre-order now for release on March 25, 2025, and sells for $12.99 for 80 pages. This work is the sixth work in the independent graphic novel “The Last Airbender” series, which began in 2020 with “Katara and the Pirate’s Silver” by Hicks et al.
