Other Worlds: The Art of Alex Rees

Spike Trotman’s Iron Circus Comics – The leading publisher of award-winning and critically acclaimed graphic novels that have raised nearly $5 million in crowdfunding launches on Kickstarter Alex Rees returns to publish ‘other worlds: the art of’, the first personal and professional collection of the prolific Alex Rees. Featuring iconic art and unreleased works from Subnautica Below Zero. OTHER WORLDS: THE ART OF ALEX RIES is a 300+ page hardcover with a foreword by Jamie Beswalik and Greg Broadmore and a detailed commentary by the artist himself.
Reece developed a deep connection to nature and an interest in science from a young age in rural south-eastern Australia. As an artist, his work explores the diversity of life on Earth, the possibility of life beyond Earth, and the balance between civilization and the natural world. His impressive work Subnautica: Below Zero combined his knowledge of marine life with the creation of realistic alien creatures. Additionally, his personal project, The Birrin Saga, tells the story of an alien planet called Kriira and its inhabitants.
Reese said:
Real-world natural history is the basis for much of my work, and throughout my career I have had the opportunity to paint both living and extinct animals. His special interest in marine life, both living and extinct, developed through his early experiences on the coasts of south-eastern Australia.
Mr Rees added:
This book is the culmination of decades of research through traditional illustration, concept art, and even sculpture.
I have filled it with works that document important creative moments in my professional life as well as in my personal life. This is the culmination of my life as a creative person so far, and it’s something you can actually hold in your hands, and it’s the kind of books, creatures, machines, otherworldly things that I loved as a kid. This is a book about life.
Iron Circus founder C. Spike Trotman said:
With a unique imagination, a timeless sense of wonder, and a detailed grounding in all life-giving reality, Reese’s creatures and worlds cast a lasting glow in the viewer.
He’s not the only one saying great things. The creators came out of the woods to make sure his name was known.
Andrew Baker, concept artist for Avatar: The Way of Water and Pacific Rim: Uprising, added:
Alex has an incredible ability to weave his understanding of design, worldbuilding, biology, and storytelling into every part of his work. I’m always fascinated and excited by his work, and I find the world of BIRRIN particularly fascinating. I can’t wait to see where Alex takes us next.
Mike Corriero, outsourced art director for Warriors of the Future, said:
The depth with which Alex Rees approaches his art lies at the level of scientific charts. The amazing level of detail makes the designs of creatures and ships more believable.
Blizzard/SpaceX art director/industrial designer Mathias Verhasselt said:
Alex Rees is one of the few artists who transports my imagination to another world without hesitation.
Pantheon, Sonic 2 and 3 director/animator Stanley von Medvey exclaimed:
Alex Rees belongs to the pantheon of exobiological visionary artists like Barlow. I think everyone worth their salt already has their work saved in a reference folder.
Trotman concluded with an important statement.
I originally left KICKSTARTER for a good reason, and now I feel like I came back for an equally good reason. It was never about the site. It was about a decision made by the previous management team. And I’m reassured by my conversations with KS BRASS, rank-and-file employees, and users, and their adoption and adherence to the Community Advisory Board’s recommendations. Everyone makes mistakes, but not everyone steps back and recognizes them as mistakes.
