A sequel to the hugely successful Subnautica is getting closer and closer to light, and we got our first official look at it at Xbox’s Partner Showcase event on Thursday. The Subnautica 2 reveal trailer opens with a cut between a zombie diver in the deep ocean with a low-oxygen warning flashing on his helmet, and a colorful Finding Nemo-esque coral biome. In the latter space, a diver tries to swim away from a large crab-like creature that appears, but is sucked into the darkness. A fellow human on a submersible appears and greets them, but what appears is a gigantic being.
The presence of a second person emphasizes that Subnautica 2 will feature four-player co-op, something players of the open water survival series have long requested. “We felt introducing an optional co-op experience on an entirely new planet was the perfect opportunity to make that switch. We’re confident your ingenuity and adaptability will be tested as you explore the world together.” ” said Donya Abramo. As the community manager for developer and publisher Unknown Worlds writes on Xbox Wire: “But for those who prefer the eerily beautiful solitude of solo play, Subnautica 2 offers that familiar experience and will prove just as challenging.”
More details about the game will be released in the coming months, including new and improved tools, vehicles, and information about base building. Of course, there are many creatures of all sizes.
Subnautica 2 will enter early access next year. It will initially be available in Xbox Game Preview on PC and Xbox Series X/S via Steam, Epic Games Store, and Game Pass.
