Firebreak, a cooperative shooter in the Control universe

After a long and winding road, Remedy Entertainment has announced the multiplayer sequel to Control. FBC: Firebreak is for teams of three, who will face waves of enemies with an interesting arsenal of weapons. For example, the trailer shows a creepy poisonous Gatling gun and a gun with a front-mounted firing piston for aerial attacks.

FBC: Firebreak is set in the same world as Control (and Alan Wake II), allowing players to explore more of this surreal location. The trailer showed off a shootout at the Federal Bureau of Control and the Oldest House, a setting that will be familiar to anyone who’s played Control and its DLC. However, due to its different approach to gameplay, FBC: Firebreak is not intended to be a direct sequel to the psychological hit game. “You could say it’s a spin-off, but in the most positive sense of the word,” said game director Mike Kayatta. “It wasn’t designed to be some kind of little bite-sized control. FBC: Firebreak is fully formed on its own.”

The studio’s collaborative project was first teased in 2021. Firebreak clearly has some improvements from the original concept that Remedy published with 505 Games. At the time, the company was also working on a free-to-play co-op shooter with conglomerate Tencent, but the codename “Project Vanguard” was scrapped in 2023. The two tried to re-envision the game as a premium title, but that too fell by the wayside.

FBC: Firebreak is currently scheduled for release in 2025 and will be available on Game Pass at launch. It will be released on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5.
