More than a year after its unofficial demise, Heavy Metal Entertainment has announced that the legendary magazine of the same name will return with a new first issue in 2025. Cartoonist, filmmaker, and former content editor Frank Forte will return to the magazine as editor-in-chief. Dave Kelly will serve as editor-in-chief and Chris Thompson will serve as editorial manager. A pre-order campaign for the first issue will launch on Kickstarter sometime next month in November, offering fans a limited edition cover and merchandise.
Heavy Metal #1 (2025) Cover by Greg Hildebrandt
In 1977, four arthouse visionaries decided to make science fiction, fantasy, and horror a home in pop culture. It took over 45 years, but while heavy metal has always been here in the zeitgeist, other brands have tried to claim our birthright. And now we’ve come to reclaim the genre’s rightful throne. Dive into the world of heavy metal past, present and future. It boldly charts the direction in which we can expand our minds and push the boundaries of pop culture.
“Heavy Metal”, which was first published in 1977 as the English version of the French science fiction magazine “Metal Fullant”, will be published in April 2023 after a contract with Massive Publishing to relaunch the magazine fell apart after several postponements. It was discontinued after issue 320. The hiatus comes after current CEO Marshall Rees took over from Matthew Medney in January 2023. Matthew Medney has left the company amid reports that he failed to pay freelancers and sold the rights to publish articles in other countries without creators’ permission.
Leeds, perhaps hoping for a genuine fresh start, said in a press release: The magazine has returned to its boundary-pushing roots. After that, the brand has a lot of exciting new plans that we hope fans will really be interested in. ”He continues: “We wanted to assemble a team of passionate professionals with complementary skills and a shared vision for our brand, (and) we wanted Frank, Dave, Chris, and the rest of the team to do the same.” We believe we’ve found that across all aspects of our business. ”
Since the announcement began to spread, there has already been a buzz on social media from freelancers with unpaid bills for Heavy Metal’s latest edition. Hopefully the team can start making things right.
