Image Comics has announced that writer Jason Aaron and artist Mahmoud Asrar are reteaming for a six-part dark fantasy series, Bug Wars, which will begin in February of this year. Pitched by Aaron as a combination of Honey, I Shrunk the Kids and Game of Thrones, the comic is about a boy who is forced to fight a war in a small kingdom in his backyard.

Slade Slaymaker is a boy from Alabama who suddenly finds himself in a world more brutal than he could have imagined, a world of marauding ant armies, spell-casting spider witches, and beetle-riding savages. A small but deadly kingdom of warriors hidden in your backyard. The same world where her father was eaten alive by insects. Now, young Slade throws himself into the middle of a brutal bug war to decide the fate of his family.

Aaron commented: “When I was a kid, my backyard was a wonderful place and I would spend hours imagining epic adventures with action figures strewn across the grass. In many ways, I still love running around in the garden. I feel like that kid who was making up stories, only the stories have gotten a little darker in recent years. For Slade Slaymaker, his backyard in Alabama is a place of horror and brutality. It turns out that a faction of tiny sword-wielding Maytes and an army of flesh-eating beetles and acid-spraying ants have declared war on his family.

The book will be Aaron’s first creator-owned comic since last year’s BOOM! The studio’s story, “Once Upon a Time at the End of the World,” is the first Image work since “Sea of Stars,” which ended in 2021, and for Asraal, “Dynamo” 5” (2007-2010).

Asler, who previously worked with Aaron on Marvel’s Conan the Barbarian, said: “‘Bug Wars’ is the culmination of what I wanted to do in comics: a fantasy epic told without any constraints. ” he added. A story where our imagination runs wild. It’s where we reach heights of escapism while keeping everything grounded in heartfelt and pure human emotion. ”

The two will talk more about the series at this Sunday’s New York Comic Con panel, “Image Comics Presents: Breaking Ground,” which will be held from 11 a.m. in room 406.2. The duo will also have stalls at Artist Alley tables H42 (Aaron) and D24 (Athraal) respectively, selling Ashcan copies of the first issue while supplies last.

Bug Wars #1 is set to be released on February 12, 2025 with numerous covers by Asrar, Pepe Larraz, Peach Momoko, Tony S. Daniel, and Mike Del Mundo, check it out below can.
