Image Comics has revealed that Jason Aaron and Mahmoud Asrar will team up for Bug Wars, with colors by Matthew Wilson and letters by Becca Carey. The first issue will be an oversized six-issue dark fantasy series scheduled to debut on February 12, 2025. You can find out more about the series at the “Image Comics Presents: Breaking Ground” panel on Sunday, October 20 @ 11. I’m in room 406.2 at New York Comic Con this week.

“When I was a kid, my backyard was a wonderful place and I would spend hours imagining epic adventures with action figures strewn across the grass. In many ways, I still love running around in the garden. I feel like that kid who was making up stories, only the stories have gotten a little darker over the last few years,” Aaron said. “For Slade Slaymaker, his backyard in Alabama turns out to be a place of terror and brutality, where a faction of tiny sword-wielding Mites and an army of flesh-eating beetles and acid-spraying ants attack him. “Honey, think I’m shrinking my kids meets Game of Thrones.”

So, what are Bug Wars?

Slade Slaymaker is a boy from Alabama who suddenly finds himself in a world more brutal than he could have imagined, a world of marauding ant armies, spell-casting spider witches, and beetle-riding savages. A small but deadly kingdom of warriors hidden in your backyard. The same world where her father was eaten alive by insects. Now, young Slade throws himself into the middle of a brutal bug war to decide the fate of his family.

Asler continued, “‘Bug Wars’ is the culmination of everything I wanted to do in comics, a fantasy epic told without any constraints. A story where our imaginations run wild. All from the heart and pure.” It’s where we reach the heights of escapism while keeping it grounded in human emotion.”

Check out covers by Peach Momoko, Tony S. Daniel, and more.

We can see the world beneath our feet from a cruel and bloody perspective. In Bug Wars, tiny warriors wage a fierce war for control of a kingdom ruled by insects.

Bug Wars #1 will be available in comic book shops on Wednesday, February 12, 2025. It will also be available on many digital platforms including Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, and Google Play.
