Hades II’s first major update adds new regions, primary weapon, and native Mac support

Hades II The first major update has been madethis is all the reason I need to go back to the roguelite that inspired me. Supergiant Games calls the Olympic update “virtually mountain-scale,” likely because it features a new region set in the mountains of Olympus.

New regions add new story elements. According to the studio, “hours of new dialogue” has been added to the game. Two new allies also appear in the region, but Supergiant remains silent about their true identities. In other words, you’ll need to traverse Olympus to find out. I’d bet with obol points that they’re some type of Greek god, considering the region.

The update also includes a new main weapon, two animal companions, and “dozens of new cosmetic items” to spice up Crossroads. Now there is also a world map, which is displayed when moving from one region to another. It’s a small flourish, but a pretty fun one.

There are also a number of quality of life improvements throughout the game. These include faster weapon attacks, new special moves, a more responsive dash, and a refined aiming system. Finally, games can now run on Macs as well, as long as your computer has an Apple M1 or newer chip.

Despite a ton of new features, the game is still in early access. Supergiant says this won’t be the last big content drop while it remains in Early Access, as another big update will be released early next year. So I’m looking forward to that. The first game was in early access for nearly two years, gradually morphing into the game we know and love today. Hades II is only about five months old.

For the uninitiated, Hades II is a roguelite hack-and-slash action game with fluid controls, a variety of upgrades, and a story cleverly woven into every failed run. There are also cute cats that you can play with. This is clearly a sequel to the blockbuster Hades, which was the first video game to win a Hugo Award.
