Sony announced in January that it was planning to adapt the 2015 PlayStation game “Until Dawn” into a movie, and the project is moving quickly into production. Earlier this month, director David F. Sandberg posted on Instagram that filming had wrapped on the film, and today Sony’s production company Screen Gems announced that the film will be released on April 25, 2025.
Until Dawn is a cult favorite among horror game fans, with a branching story that offers dozens of different endings based on the player’s choices. For those who have yet to experience the original Supermassive Games title, the game recently received a timely spooky season remake from Ballistic Moon. One of the big questions when creating a movie from game sources is which of the many possible outcomes the team will choose for the plot. And the other big question is, will Until Dawn follow in the footsteps of successful game adaptations like the Super Mario Bros. movie, or will it be an absolute disaster like Borderlands? I mean, is it?
So far, the signs look promising. Director Sandberg has a strong track record in the horror field with “Lights Out” and “Annabelle”. The final script was written by Gary Dauberman, who worked with Sandberg on Annabelle and also wrote the screenplays for other Annabelle films, It (2017), It Chapter 2, and The Nun. .
The game featured notable actors such as Hayden Panetière and Rami Malek. For the film, Screen Gems has assembled a cast that includes Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino, Yoo Ji-young, Belmont Cameli, Odessa Azion, and Maia Mitchell. Peter Stormare will also reprise his role as Dr. Hill in the film version.
