The Federal Communications Commission announced it is launching a new investigation into broadband data caps and how they affect both the consumer experience and business competition. The FCC is asking consumers to share their experiences with limited broadband service. The agency has also launched a formal notice of inquiry to gather public comments to further inform the broadband data cap initiative.
FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel said, “Restricting consumer data cuts off small businesses from their customers, imposes fees on low-income households, and limits the ability of people with disabilities to use the tools they rely on to communicate.” There is a possibility that it will not be possible.” “As the nation’s leading communications organization, it is our duty to dig deeper into these practices and put consumers first.”
The topic has been a hot topic of late, with the FCC last year launching a new notice of inquiry into the practice of placing restrictions on internet access. In April 2024, the agency successfully required ISPs to provide clear information labels on their service plans detailing additional fees, discounts, and upload and download speeds. Data caps could also come under further fire as the FCC seeks to reinstate net neutrality rules that classify broadband as an essential service. But restoring net neutrality has not been an easy road, as the agency faces legal challenges from broadband providers.
