Massive Pokémon leak reveals beta design, source code, and plans for future titles

Game Freak, the developer of Pokemon, suffered a breach this weekend when a treasure trove of internal documents about the franchise, from source code to early and, in some cases, scrapped character designs, were leaked on social media. admitted. The company said in a statement Thursday (translated from Japanese) that it discovered its servers were hacked in August, exposing confidential employee information. Although it did not mention the Pokemon leak, it appears that much of this content was published online after the statement was released.

Leaked documents and images flooded Reddit and X after Centro Leaks began leaking all documents and images on Saturday afternoon. The “Terra Leak” files, as some fans are calling them, are said to contain source code for past games such as Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver, and will be used on the Switch 2 and the upcoming 10th generation Pokemon games. Contains the code names “Ounce” and “Gaia” respectively. References to the Pokémon MMO in development and internal discussions at design meetings. There are also details about an unreleased Detective Pikachu sequel, other planned Pokémon movies, and a new animated series.

The scope of the leak was huge, and in addition to the source code, a large amount of beta character designs and concept art were released. Neither Nintendo nor the Pokémon Company have yet officially acknowledged this leak. Engadget has reached out for comment. Game Freak noted in a statement that an unauthorized third party had accessed the personal information of more than 2,600 current and former employees, said it was strengthening its security and said it was not affected by the breach.
