Comic Review: Street Fighter Classic Vol. 4: Kick It Into Turbo

The penultimate volume of Street Fighter Classic depicts the preliminaries for mixed martial arts tournaments around the world, taking in the sights of Metro City (which every Final Fight fan is familiar with) and the seedy… Characters will also appear. There’s also a deadly twist in the US leg of the tournament, as revealed by the Mike Tyson-esque Balrog.

As we near the end of this series and the one-on-one combat action builds, I start to miss the more melodramatic elements of the series. It’s not that they don’t exist (oh, there are so many silly and fun twists), but I think this series is stronger with less focus on the fight scenes.

That being said, UDON knows Street Fighter well, and they certainly know how to adapt the game’s fight sequences in a truly dynamic and impressive way, despite the lack of animation in the comics.

Their style is somewhere between effects-heavy video games and anime. As anyone who’s read Street Fighter comics up to this point already knows, they’re consistently great.

I also really love the Final Fight cameo here. If you’re a regular reader, you’ll know how much I love classic arcade beat-em-up games.

With just one more volume to go, who’s in and who’s the favorite to win? We’ll soon find out…
