Mubi has secured US rights and worldwide SVOD rights to Grand Theft Hamlet. In this documentary, two out-of-work actors attempt to stage the complete production of William Shakespeare’s tragedy Hamlet within the game world of Grand Theft Auto Online during the COVID-19 pandemic . According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mubi plans to release the film in early 2025, with Mubi’s own post on X saying it will “play in U.S. theaters and stream worldwide.”
This movie consists of over 300 hours of GTA footage. Sam Crane and Marc Oosterveen may have been the main driving forces behind making this play a reality, but they also looped in other random players through in-game auditions to fill out the cast. This theatrical machinima production won the Documentary Feature Jury Award at its SXSW premiere. Critics and early reviewers are also in love with this mashup of iambs and uzis, as it currently boasts a 95% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
“The Bard” has been retold many times over the years, but “Hamlet” seems to be particularly interesting for game-flavored interpretations. The Danish prince starred in a VR collaboration with Google in 2019, starred in the MMORPG Mabinogi in 2011, and is set to star in his own quirky video game in 2010.
