Other Worlds: The Art of Alex Rees
Ries is known for his work as a concept artist on Subnautica: Below Zero and as a world builder on The Birrin Saga. It’s no wonder that their artwork captivates with alien and world designs that feel incredibly realistic thanks to their unique, informed and speculative biology-based perspective.

Spike Trotman’s Iron Circus Comics is a premier publisher of award-winning and critically acclaimed graphic novels in the American Midwest that has raised nearly $5 million in crowdfunding. However, I will return to Kickstarter and publish “OTHER WORLDS: THE ART OF ALEX RIES”. The first personal and professional collection from the prolific Alex Rees, featuring iconic art from Subnautica: Below Zero and never-before-published works. OTHER WORLDS: THE ART OF ALEX RIES is a 300+ page hardcover with a foreword by Jamie Beswalik and Greg Broadmore and an extensive commentary by the artist himself.
Reece developed a deep connection to nature and an interest in science from a young age in rural south-eastern Australia. As an artist, his work explores the diversity of life on Earth, the possibility of life beyond Earth, and the balance between civilization and the natural world. His impressive work Subnautica: Below Zero combined his knowledge of marine life with the creation of realistic alien creatures. Additionally, his personal project, The Birrin Saga, tells the story of an alien planet called Kriira and its inhabitants.
Reese said:
Real-world natural history underpins much of my work, and throughout my career I have had the opportunity to paint both living and extinct animals. His special interest in living and extinct marine life developed through his early experiences on the coasts of south-eastern Australia.
Iron Circus founder C. Spike Trotman says:
With a unique imagination, a timeless sense of wonder, and a detailed grounding in reality that brings everything to life, Reese’s creatures and worlds cast a lasting glow in the viewer.
He’s not the only one saying nice things. Andrew Baker, concept artist for Avatar: The Way of Water and Pacific Rim: Uprising, added:
Alex has an uncanny ability to weave his understanding of design, worldbuilding, biology, and storytelling into all his work. I’m always fascinated and excited by his artwork, but Billin’s world in particular is very fascinating. I’m really looking forward to following where Alex takes us next.
Trotman concluded with the following exclusive statement:
I originally left Kickstarter for the right reasons, and now I feel like I’m coming back for just as many right reasons. It was never about the site. It was about a decision made by the previous management team. And I’m reassured by my conversations with KS executives, rank-and-file employees, and users, and their adoption and adherence to the Community Advisory Board’s recommendations. Everyone makes mistakes, but not everyone takes a step back and recognizes them as mistakes.
