Always one of the most entertaining characters in the first generation (or G1) of Transformers, Starscream is known for his blatant desire to usurp Megatron, the leader of the Decepticons, and his snobbery that prevents him from achieving his ultimate goal. He was forever known for his sobbing, cowardly personality.
But what set Starscream on the path to becoming a Weasel-like duplicitous Decepticon? The answer is in Transformers #13. This includes flashbacks to Starscream’s younger days on Cybertron. Rather than an origin, this can perhaps be best described as the birth of Starscream, a character everyone should hate.
This is another great piece of writing by Daniel Warren Johnson that defies all expectations and makes the reader not only care about Starscream, but also how he works with the Autobots (and, for that matter, his companions). make them actively want to succeed and survive against the Decepticons. Given the fact that so much is covered in so few pages, it’s amazing how quickly readers can go from completely against Starscream to then completely on his side. . This is also a testament to how good Johnson is in this series. It’s phenomenal.
So far, the creators who turned Johnson’s script into art have done a great job of imitating Johnson’s own dynamic art style while bringing their own flair to the illustrations. This issue, with art by Jason Howard, is no different in that regard. Mike Spicer, as always, delivers some great work on color.
There’s been a lot of hype surrounding the Skybound Energon Universe comic, and it’s not hard to see why, considering just how strong the Transformers are. The series turns 40 this year, and even though it’s gone through countless reboots and reinventions over the decades, G1 Transformers has rarely been treated so well or included . This series continues to truly surprise me with each issue.
The only weakness is the monthly release schedule, which is too slow for my liking. I need issue 14 now, damn it.
