Despite the company’s recent decision to comply with the Brazilian Supreme Court’s request, X is still not back online in Brazil. That’s at least partly due to paying the fine to the wrong bank, according to Reuters. After being banned from Brazil for several weeks, X appointed a legal representative in Brazil in late September, as ordered, and took down his account, which a court had accused of spreading misinformation and hate speech. The final hurdle was paying off the fine, which was estimated to be around $5 million.
Citing a court filing on Friday, Reuters reported that Company X said it had paid the fine and requested the service be reinstated. However, Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the funds had been sent to the wrong bank and a decision would have to wait until the transfer was complete. According to Reuters, Company X maintains that it paid the fine correctly. X has been banned in Brazil since the end of August. The company initially resisted the court order, but recently changed its tune and said it was working with the Brazilian government to bring the platform back online in the country.
