Nintendo has shut down another emulator, this time putting an end to Ryujinx. This program was an open-source emulator for playing Nintendo Switch games on Windows, Linux, and Mac operating systems. A message shared with the emulator’s Discord server today states that the developer has been contacted by Nintendo regarding a deal to cease work on the project. Further details about the terms of the agreement were not disclosed. The same message was also posted on X.
The emulator will still work for those already running it, but the Github repository has been removed. Ryujinx also made headlines last month for running the new Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom game at over 120 frames per second, significantly exceeding the Switch’s capabilities.
Nintendo has taken an aggressive stance on emulators, even partnering with a cybersecurity company to curb game piracy in 2023. Ryujinx is one of the most popular emulators the company works on, but the gaming company also reached a $2.4 million settlement with emulator Yuzu in March. In May, we issued a whopping 8,535 DMCA takedowns to remove all Yuzu code hosted in various Github repositories.
