ShortBox Comic Fair, Zainab Akhtar’s October all-digital online comic convention, returns in 2024 with over 100 artists. Digital comics from each creator are published monthly through the SBCF website. Therefore, you don’t have to worry about the edition being sold out as long as you get it in time. Whether you’re an annual Digital Comic-Con regular or discovering it for the first time, you’re sure to find a comic that will surprise and delight you. Or it disgusts you, stimulates your senses, crushes your heart, unlocks your memories, and summons ghosts to haunt you. For now, we can look forward to the most powerful work in the comics medium: the one that connects creator and reader directly.

SBCF is comprised of comics of varying lengths, subjects, and styles. We’ve selected 24 books from the 2024 Shortbox Comics Fair releases. About 6 of them are by creators that I’m a huge fan of, and most of them look cool to me. That being said, this list is probably more reflective of what I’m personally interested in in comics than what the fair has to offer as a whole.
SBCF’s digital releases are PDFs that you purchase, download, and own. Money goes directly to each creator. There is no “table fee” for artists at the fair, and they receive the majority of the proceeds. Last year, SBCF artists earned a total of $400,000. Akhtar is one of the most beloved physical book publishers in the modern micropress scene, but we’ve found that all the logistics of printing, distribution, and promotion get in the way of our love of editorial curation. I noticed. SBCF is not about her success. It’s about elevating creators.
Applications for next year’s SBCF are still being accepted!

Again, this is less than a quarter of what’s available digitally at ShortBox Comics Fair. From the first convention until Halloween, the convention’s doors are open to the whole world (the wide web). So if you’re curious about the current state of the next generation of comics, want some ideas about the possibilities this medium has, or just want some inspiration for where comics can go in the future, it’s here it is.
This article has been updated to reflect how this year’s artist split was structured.
