The IDW Saturday Morning Adventure concept is original. A modern cartoon based on the classic 80s cartoon with an original storyline, using the original style and tone of the show it’s based on. This will be a nostalgic experience for adults who grew up avidly watching each animated series for the first time, but those who may be familiar with the characters’ more modern incarnations enjoy the fast-paced and colorful story. Also suitable for young readers who need it. Nevertheless, a rather creepy story found in the Saturday Morning Adventures comics.
The TMNT Saturday Morning Adventures mini-series was a huge success and spawned an ongoing title. This is the second issue in that (currently ongoing) series.
In this issue, the Mouse King has taken control of the three Turtles. After losing his ability to corral rats in New York City, his powers mutate, allowing him to control the Turtles instead. Using them for their own nefarious purposes, it’s up to Donatello, Splinter, and April to rescue the trio of brainwashed Turtles and stop the Rat King’s criminal activities.
The action unfolds at a very fast pace in this issue, and it’s fun every step of the way. The artwork is nicely reminiscent of classic manga style, and the overall tone is on a suitably ridiculous level. It almost feels like it might be a truly lost episode. There’s a lot to like here, including the bold, colorful artwork and the fun, campy script. It all wraps up very neatly, albeit with an epilogue that leaves the door open for a sequel-style adventure.
I love the Saturday Morning Adventure comics. It’s easy to see how and why the TMNT series continues alongside more serious comic book series. Sometimes you want a story that’s silly, fun, and action-packed. That’s certainly what you get here.
