In Violator: Origin #1, we learn that long before Violator did nightmarish things like ripping Spawn’s heart out of his body, he was a celestial being known as Baziel of Heaven (BH, or Heaven, “Before Humans”). Violator tells his own story, adding the dark humor and twisted charm we’ve come to expect from such a demonic creature. Story-wise, what I liked most about Violator: Origins is that every choice has long-term consequences, especially if you choose the path of manipulation and betrayal. Andreyko does a great job portraying Violator’s inner conflict, showing us that sometimes we are destined to become what we hold deep inside.
Piotr Kowalski’s artwork and Brad Simpson’s color work create a visual spectacle that feels like a blockbuster movie that leaps off the page. The cinematic flair is simply flawless, especially in scenes where we witness Badziel’s brutal transformation from a celestial being into the twisted nightmare that is The Violator.
