The 2024 Roku Ultra is the latest update to the streaming player, announced today at the company’s developer conference. The original version of the device was one of our top picks for streaming devices. The new model promises great quality-of-life improvements, including 30% faster performance for content loading and interface navigation thanks to a new quad-core processor. It features Dolby Atmos audio and Dolby Vision, delivering 4K and HDR10+ picture quality. The Ultra supports Wi-Fi 6 and can also connect directly over Ethernet.
This streaming device also has an updated controller. The Voice Remote Pro (2nd Edition) has backlit buttons, USB-C charging, direct access to the Live TV Guide, and a new feature called Quick Launch, which introduces a personalized screen for viewers’ most used apps and voice commands. The remote also has all the usual features for selecting content and controlling playback.
Roku is also releasing a new version of its OS. Roku OS 14 adds thumbs up and down icons to provide feedback about shows, allows for more customization, and helps users receive better show recommendations. The company also makes Kids & Family content available from the main home screen and adds voice control. The update will be rolling out to supported devices in the US “in the coming months.”
