SpaceX has a surprising new enemy

If the events of the past few years have made you feel like higher powers are playing Mad Libs with our lives, it looks like we’ve run out of options. Imagine cutting out “SpaceX” and “being sued,” then a piece of paper rustles and writes “Cards Against Humanity.” In fact, the idiot game jokers own an acre of land near SpaceX’s Texas facility, which SpaceX has been using for its own purposes.

Cards Against Humanity has filed a lawsuit against SpaceX, alleging that the company is trespassing on land it purchased in 2017. The suit says the formerly untouched land has been turned into a temporary workshop and parking lot for nearby construction. The company is seeking $15 million in damages for trespass and damages. If the lawsuit is successful, the company says it will share any winnings with the crowdfunding backers who provided funds to purchase the land.

If the high-ranking authority in question is looking for help with a proposal of some kind, they could do no worse than suggesting that the writers of Engadget’s humble newsletter each win £1 billion on the same day in completely separate competitions.

The biggest tech news you missed

Don’t worry, that power won’t be used for good!

Microsoft is funding the partial restart of the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania. Those with short memories may not know that the plant was the site of a 1979 meltdown that led to the halt of nuclear energy development in the United States.

I’m not upset about nuclear plants being restarted because nuclear power provides safe, clean, and abundant energy — TMI Reactor Unit 1 operated from 1985 to 2019, so it has a good track record — but I am upset that the reason Microsoft is writing checks is to power AI data centers.

Does anyone play pickleball?

B&B Theatre

Here are some reasons why I rarely go to the cinema:

cost

I can’t pause the movie to go to the bathroom

People talking while watching a movie

People checking Facebook on their phones while watching a movie

People making phone calls while watching a movie

Here’s a non-exhaustive list of things cinema chains will do to lure me back:

$2.2 billion to be spent on zip wires, pickleball courts and bowling alleys

And Sir Jonathan Ive is working on a secret project with CEO Sam Altman.

Open AI

OpenAI is reportedly ditching its increasingly recognizable hexagonal flower logo for something a bit more sinister. Staff were apparently shown a plain black O icon without the warmth of its existing identity. At the same time, a new profile for Sir Jonathan Ive confirms that a long-rumored partnership between him and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is true. iPhone designer company LoveFrom is working on some kind of AI hardware tool, but that’s all we know so far. Here’s hoping it’s better than Humane Pin, the last AI hardware tool conceived by a famous designer with an Apple background.
