Discord is introducing new end-to-end encryption for both voice and video calls on the platform. The technology applies to calls from DMs, group DMs, voice channels, and Go Live streams. In a blog post, Discord detailed the technology and goals of end-to-end encryption (E2EE). Desktop and mobile clients already support the new upgrade, with the remaining clients expected to get the feature next year.
The company is committed to transparency about its E2EE protocol and has published a lot of information about it. Discord also promises that the addition of E2EE will not sacrifice call quality. One notable exception to the encryption protocol is messages, which Discord says will still be subject to the company’s content moderation rules.
This kind of end-to-end encryption has become increasingly common over the past few years, and it’s not uncommon to see it as an option or the new default for users of platforms like Signal, WhatsApp, and Zoom.
