Shining a humorous light on the fantasy genre in the most gentle and loving way, the Duds & Dragons saga gets its planned 10-issue run off to a fantastic start with this first issue.
Lycan pup Fenris is a dud, which in fantasy terms means he has no role to play in the endless battles that plague his world. After an introduction where the reader is explained the different terms that describe more useful adventurers, we watch alongside Fenris as his bigger, stronger siblings try to raise him into an adventurer the village can depend on. When things suddenly go hugely wrong and fate demands that Fenris suddenly be more than a dud, will he be able to rise to the occasion?
This is a charming comic. Despite its many elements of parody and humor, Graham Misiulak’s script manages to be serious when it needs to be, and to portray the real, authentic dangers its protagonist faces. It doesn’t downplay the real dangers or turn tragedies into comedy. It keeps the serious elements serious, meaning you root for its little protagonist as he faces a real threat to the world.
The artwork is fantastic. Joanna Matelek has a knack for character design, clear storytelling, and action choreography, especially during the training scenes that turn into slapstick comedy. Josh Rodriguez’s colors make this issue beautiful and vibrant (Alberto Sapien and AL Jones provide a truly beautiful cover, by the way).
Duds & Dragons #1 really gets this new series off to a great start and I’m really looking forward to seeing how Fenris fare as his adventures continue.
Duds & Dragons #1 is available to purchase directly from Duskleaf Media Thanks to Graham Misiurak for providing a digital copy of Duds & Dragons #1 for review purposes.
