Utsumi is one of those cartoons. You know that species. You walk thinking it’s one thing, but it turns out to change your life. For those who don’t know, Utsumi, previously titled Mare Internum, is a science fiction comic by Der-Shing Helmer. Originally published online in 2015, two scientists, Dr. Michael Fisher and Dr. Bex Egunsola, are on a catastrophic cave on Mars. Instead of being crushed from the cave’s collapse, the pair lands in a closed ecosystem beneath a cave filled with life. With awe at the scientific discoveries that can change their lives forever, they begin to find…
My fellow Trekkie, welcome to the best holiday of the year: Star Trek Day! The annual Star Trek Fandom celebration takes place annually on September 8th, the day the Star Trek: Original series debuted all over the United States (fun fact: the popular science fiction series created by Gene Roddenberry, who debuted in Canada on September 6th, two days before its US release). To celebrate Star Trek Day 2025, Beat shares an associate managing editor Olly Kaplan’s San Diego Comics-CON 2025 interview with some of the creative minds behind IDW Publishing’s current Star Trek comics. While at SDCC 2025, Kaplan…
Sometimes I wonder how I managed to get into some of the comics I read as a child. I was very interested in horror, sci-fi, mystery, everything genres, but the beginning of my childhood was mostly limited to DC comics, comic book-based books, the mighty Thor issues that my parents persuaded to buy when they went to town over the weekend, and the strange three packs we could find when we shop elsewhere. Especially department stores. When we moved to town and finally got access to our dedicated comic shop, I wasn’t limited to a singular publisher. I do anything…
Most comic book fans have solid ideas about what to buy each week when they come down to their local comic store. That being said, there’s still plenty to be enjoyed just by watching this week’s new release and taking the opportunity with a book that looks promising, entertaining, and scary. That’s where the cover comes in. A great image can make the difference between trying something new or saying “not this week.” In that spirit, here is the cover that caught our attention this week, and an entry from comic editor Chris Coplan. This is determined by the cover.…
Whether it’s Godzilla or his brother, it’s not an exaggeration to say that the popularity of the monster has revived in the last few years. So it’s appropriate that the latest issue of Monstrous Magazine will unfold largely in Monstrous: The Kaiju Issue, an oversized issue celebrating the legendary monsters that will be released on Kickstarter. The issue includes a variety of features, including an essay on the history of the Ninjagowriter monster toys and an essay by Chris “Document” Wyatt, co-founder of Planetary Toys. The Beat is proud to exclusively publish Wyatt’s work, Terror in Plastic, in the Kaiju…
If you like the robots, the dystopian world, and the fear of Eldrichian, hopefully, you’ve already seen a murderous drone. Created by Liam Vickers, Murder Drones first aired on Glitch’s YouTube channel in October 2021. In a posthuman world where workers and assembly drones fight, they come together to tear down two members of each “camp” (workcard loan wizard man and drone “n” to tackle the biggest threat to this strange new world. There may be a Romeo and Juliet vibe, but 1,000% is eccentric/strange. Anyway, the murder drone is clearly hitting chords, with the eight-episode season gaining around 330…
Carla Speed McNeill is one of our great living cartoonists. I said that. Their longtime science fantasy comic finder is a complex stew of dramas of plot, anthropology, magic and quotes. The best immersive worldbuilding, and yes, it takes a sweet time to go anywhere, but that’s the overall point, and at the same time, it’s presented a voice that knows everything and descends on the earth. The art features inventive and intuitive storytelling that has become a precious collaborator on comics that he hasn’t written for people like Greg Rucka to Alex de Campi. The viewfinder was probably too…
In April, Mint (Mint) announced that it will be launching a coin series featuring Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman in collaboration with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products (WBDGCP). That’s not all, but Wonder Woman Coin now appears to be designed back in April. Check out Wonder Woman Coin below. Advance sales of Wonder Woman Coin will be held on November 13th, 2025. It also seems to have settled down the design of the Batman coin. This is because some designs became clear in the spring. Please check the following: These coins are not cheap, with silver medals priced at…
