It’s no secret that I enjoy Declan Shalvey’s current version of The Terminator. Shalvey not only breathed life into a series I was burnt out on, but he finally cracked the code that most filmmakers have avoided. I mean, why would Skynet send a Terminator after just one person? If you had a time machine, the places you could go (and therefore the storytelling possibilities) could theoretically be endless.Shalvey has taken full advantage of these storytelling possibilities by teaming up with a rotating team of talented artists. In Terminator #4, he and Lorenzo Re travel to the early days of…
The double-edged sword of superhero comics is that the heroes’ enemies almost always come back to haunt them. Part of this is due to the cardboard nature of some prisons. I and others have joked that Arkham Asylum might be more like a revolving door than a prison. However, there is also the question, “Why don’t heroes kill villains?” question. The answer to that tends to be twofold. Because heroes are heroes, they act on a higher level of morality, and from a story perspective, if they kill the good villain, there is no conflict.Superman #22 brings such a conflict…
Dynamite Kids has announced its first novelty board book, “Ruff ‘n Ready Rescues!,” based on Nickelodeon’s wildly popular children’s PAW Patrol preschool franchise. The television series is one of the most-watched children’s programs of the past decade, running for more than 10 seasons, including two movie specials. The story is about a team of rescued puppies, each with their own special skills, vehicles, and equipment to help solve local problems and protect the everyday civilians of Adventure Bay. This colorful, interactive board book features a lovable team of brave rescue dogs. Published through an ongoing partnership with Dynamite Entertainment, this…
Dynamite brings this all-new era to life from superstar writer David Pepose (Space Ghost, Cable) and artist Eman Casaros (Vampirella, Pathfinder) as Earth’s ultimate defender takes on a thrilling new chapter. I would like to announce that I am back. Five young people from around the world are chosen to master Gaia’s Elemental Ring and become humanity’s last hope. Each Planeteer gains control over one of Earth’s major elements: Earth, Fire, Air, Water, and Heart. In times of great need, they can join forces and summon Earth’s greatest hero, Captain Planet. Kwame, a native of Ghana, commands the powers of…

Image credit: Jason Brown/midlifegamergeek.com Jennika, aka the Nightwatcher, finds herself in a bind, captured by a very dangerous mutant. Will she be able to escape from their clutches? If so, will she be able to mend her relationship with girlfriend Sheena? There’s a lot going on in Nightwatcher #5, even though the action and drama is mainly confined to two different scenes. But Jenika’s personal struggles, both in her vigilante life and in civilian life, are poignantly addressed by author Juni Ba. Despite being a strong and disciplined mutant, she has difficulty balancing the various elements of her life, regardless…
Akai and Native Instruments are like the Nintendo and Sega of music production. Although these long-time rivals offer many similar products, some musicians are drawn to AKAI’s MPC workflow, while others choose NI’s Maschine platform. In the near future, people may not have to choose at all. The two icons in this space team up. The MPC platform will soon be home to Native Instruments sound packs. This means that if you’re currently using an MPC Live II, Key 61, or any of Akai’s standalone music production machines, you can get genuine Native Instruments sounds into your tracks. This is really…
Kelly Thompson and Hayden Sherman’s Absolute Wonder Woman captures the spirit of Wonder Woman better than any major Wonder Woman book in recent years. Thompson and Sherman build on the fundamental themes that have supported their characters’ best adventures.”Love is transformative.” Diana repeats this maxim in early issues of the series, reminding readers that Wonder Woman is best read when feminist themes are at the center of her stories. Let me do it. Readers will note that in 2011 Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang infamously replaced the character’s “made from clay” origin with a more patriarchal “daughter of Zeus” story.…
Nearly every TV on the market today is a smart TV, but not every operating system is a winner. A media streaming device lets you pair whichever user interface you prefer with just about any screen that has an HDMI port. In some cases, such as with older or less expensive smart TVs, a streaming stick or dongle could even be speedier and less glitchy than your TV’s built-in system. At home, these handy gadgets make it easier for cord cutters to watch the millions of hours of content streaming services provide without cable. And while traveling, a streaming player lets…
A series of murders in Gotham puts Batman and his family of vigilantes on high alert. The culprit, known as Asema, has been murdering teenagers, but has so far remained a mystery. That is, until Detective Comics #1093 reveals a new connection to Bruce’s past that longtime Batman fans won’t want to miss. It’s difficult for modern Batman comics to try to add to or rewrite Bruce Wayne’s past. Sure, there are a lot of gaps that could be filled in, but that’s risky in that it could recontextualize their growth and how they became Batman. The latest issue takes a…
